Year Level: Year 12 Lesson: Philosophical Issues AI Time: 40 Minute Session

Aim: At the completion of the lesson students should have developed an understanding of the two philosophical issues within AI

Objectives: By the end of this lesson students should be able to: -

Define and comment on the philosophical dilemma of the mind-body problem.
Describe and assess the validity of the Turing Test.

Key Concepts of Lesson:

Description of the mind-body problem (Copying content and homework activity)
Description of the Turing test (Copying content)
Discuss these two philosophical dilemmas in AI (Class discussion)

Materials / Resources:

Computer and data screen to show PowerPoint presentation

Paper version of PowerPoint slide and presentation in case of technological problem

Students Prior knowledge:

None from previous AI lessons, could possible be from their own observations and research, this is the first time AI is being taught as a topic in the work program.

5 min	(Anticipatory set) Pose the question "Where does the body end and the mind begin?". Direct class to write down their own response to the question. Call on students to contribute their answers. Explain that today’s lesson is on two philosophical issues surrounding AI.	Look at question Write down response Contribute response
20 min 10 min	Body Define The mind-body problem Proposed answers:- Materialism – mind and mental acts are part of the material body. Interactionism – mind has a spiritual existence rather than material make-up. Functionalism – way mind exists is of no consequence. Facilitate class discussion on the mind body problem incorporating first question posed. Second philosophical issue Alan Turing 1950 Define the Turing Test – if a human cannot determine whether material is being generated by a computer or by a human, the computer shows artificial intelligence. Facilitate class discussion "Can a computer think?" Activity to sum up lesson Ask students to write down 5 things they learnt in the lesson. Call on students to provide examples from their list and also described what items are.	Write down content of relevant PowerPoint slides Class discussion on the mind-body problem Write down content of relevant PowerPoint slides Class discussion on question posed Students write down 5 things they learnt Contribute items from list
5 min	Set homework. Students are to write a paragraph on which proposed answer to the mind body problem they believe is to be correct and give reasons as to why.	Write in diary homework instructions
